pitch yourself to podcasts

Being a guest on a podcast can help you build your coaching business

If you’re a coach or healer, being a podcast guest can be one of the most effective ways for you to grow their audience, build your visibility, and connect with your ideal clients.

Podcasts give you the opportunity to tell your story, showcase your expertise, and get exposure to a targeted audience—all in an authentic and conversational way.

How do you get on these podcasts in order to share your wisdom? It starts with crafting a stellar podcast pitch that’s tailored to your desired podcast and highlights the ways that what you have to share can serve their audience.

Follow this step-by-step guide to learn how to pitch yourself to a podcast and boost your visibility as a coach or healer.

Why you should get on podcasts as a coach

Many times clients ask me, “Should I start a podcast?” They ask this question at the same time they’re starting a business. And most of the time my answer is NO. Here’s why:

  • Starting a podcast can take almost as much time and energy as starting a business
  • Starting a podcast requires more than just knowing what you want to say; it requires a lot of marketing to build your audience
  • Many of my clients don’t love marketing and have enough trouble marketing their coaching business — they don’t want another thing to market!

So instead of starting your own podcast, I recommend being a guest on already well-known podcasts in your niche.

Being a guest on a podcast is easier and more lucrative

Being a featured guest on a podcast allows you to get exposure without having to build a podcast audience yourself. Here’s how it can help you:

  • Expand your reach. Get exposure to people in your niche who listen to this podcast and elevate your visibility.
  • Build authority in your niche. Position yourself as a leader and get bonus credibility points by being featured by known podcasts in your coaching niche.
  • Attract ideal clients. Share your POV and your message directly with people who are looking for what you have to offer.
  • Create evergreen content. Podcast episodes live on indefinitely, continuing to promote you long after they air.

The bonus is that you get all of the above without the labor of starting your own podcast!

Podcast guesting can be a lucrative marketing strategy to help you grow your coaching or healing business.

7 steps to getting featured on a podcast

So now you’re interested in pitching yourself to be on a podcast. But where do you start? How do you find podcasts to pitch? And what do you say to get your pitch accepted? Follow these 7 steps.

Step 1: Find podcasts that align with your niche

Not every podcast will be a fit for your coaching or healing business. The key is finding the right podcasts to pitch rather than using the scattershot approach and hoping something works. You want to find podcasts that align with your niche and attract your ideal clients.

  • Search by keyword. Use terms related to your niche (e.g., “mindset coaching” “somatic healing”) on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Google.
  • Check out the past episodes and guests. See what the common themes and topics are, as well as past guests, to see if the podcast is a fit for your coaching brand.
  • Assess the podcast’s metrics. Check the number of reviews and followers the podcast has; that’s a good indication of its popularity. While that’s not the only indicator of what podcast pitch, it can definitely help!

Pro Tip: If you’re just starting with pitching podcasts, target smaller, niche podcasts. These hosts are often more approachable and their audiences may be more engaged. Once you’ve built your confidence and portfolio, you can pitch to larger shows.

Step 2: Listen to several podcast episodes before you pitch

One of the biggest mistakes people make is pitching without actually listening to the podcast! Much like you research a company before applying to a job, research the podcast before applying. Listening to episodes allows you to:

  • Learn the host’s tone, style, and preferred topics.
  • Understand their audience’s pain points and interests.
  • Identify gaps where your expertise can provide value.

Pro Tip: When pitching, mention specific episodes you enjoyed. For example, “I loved your recent episode on overcoming imposter syndrome. As a mindset coach, I often help my clients navigate similar challenges and found your tip on x very helpful!” This shows you’ve done your homework and increases your chances of getting a response.

Step 3: Find your signature topic to pitch to podcasts

Most podcast hosts look for guests who can speak confidently on specific topics that resonate with their audience. That’s why I recommend choosing 3 signature topics that you can be prepared to speak on with any podcast.

How to choose your signature topics

To choose your signature topics, think about the areas where you can provide the most value and what you feel most confident speaking about. Ask yourself:

  1. What problems does my ideal client face that I can solve?
  2. What unique expertise or perspective can I offer?
  3. What topics do I feel confident and comfortable to discuss in depth?

For example, if you’re a mindset coach, your signature topics might include:

  • Strategies to overcome imposter syndrome
  • How to build resilience during life transitions
  • The connection between mindset and your career

Having signature topics makes it easier to pitch and ensures you’re prepared to talk about something you’re already comfortable with.

Step 4: Craft a standout podcast guest pitch

Your next step is to actually create your podcast guest pitch. Your pitch should be clear, concise, and tailored to the podcast.

How to deliver your podcast pitch

Your pitch can be delivered by email if you have the email address of the host or podcast. It can also be delivered via Instagram DM if you follow the podcast on Instagram. In some cases, the podcast website may have a form you can submit and pitch your ideas.

Whichever format you use, your podcast pitch should include the following:

  • A compelling subject line. Grab the host’s attention with a descriptive and unique subject line.
  • A personal introduction. Share who you are and why you love their show.
  • Your credentials. Briefly mention your experience, certifications, or notable achievements.
  • One to three specific topic ideas. Highlight a unique angle that aligns with their audience’s interests.

Step 5: Follow up with the podcast when you don’t hear back

Following up is an important part of the process of pitching a podcast and one you shouldn’t skip! If you don’t hear back within two weeks, send a polite follow-up email.

For example:

“Hi [Host’s Name], I’m following up on my recent pitch about being a guest on [Podcast Name]. I’d love the opportunity to share my insights on [specific topic]. Let me know if you’d like more details or if there’s a better time to connect!”

Keep your tone professional and avoid being pushy. Hosts appreciate persistence but won’t respond well to spammy tactics.

Bonus tip: Create a press page

A press page acts as your one-stop shop for podcast hosts to learn about you. It’s a dedicated page on your website that showcases your expertise, experience, and media appearances.

What to include on your press page:

  • A professional bio: Include a short and long version to suit different needs.
  • Headshots: Provide high-quality, downloadable images.
  • Signature topics: List the topics you’re available to speak on.
  • Previous media appearances: Link to podcast episodes, articles, or videos where you’ve been featured.
  • Contact information: Make it easy for hosts to reach you or your team.

Update your press page regularly with new podcast appearances and topics. Share the link in your pitch to make it easy for hosts to say “yes.”
